Clients / Students FAQ

S1. I want to request for a tutor, what should I do?
Click here to request a tutor or call 6366 6647. You can also send an email to info@tutorcity.com.sg

S2. I want to shortlist the tutors on your website, how can I do so?

Go to our Search Tutor page and shortlist the tutors you want to hire. Once you are ready, click on Submit Shortlist and complete the form.

S3. How do you verify the tutor’s qualifications or certificates?

We encourage tutors to upload scanned copies of their certificates in their online profile or email to us. For those who do not upload their certificates, we will instruct tutors to bring their certificates on the 1st lesson for verification.
We will then verify their certificates against their information provided. If they are accurate, you will see the
 Cert-Verified in their profile.

S4. Are there any contractual obligations upon hiring of the tutor?

No. You may terminate the tuition at any time if you are dissatisfied with the tutor’s services. You only need to pay for the lessons taught. If you decide to terminate the tuition, please inform us as we gather feedback on our tutors regularly.

S5. How will Tutor City invoice me for your agency commission?

The agency commission is normally 50% of the first 4 weeks of tuition fees deducted from the tutor, less the Cashback incentive where applicable. You will pay the balance 50% to the tutor directly on the 4th week. In other words, you only for the lessons received - half goes to Tutor City and the other half to the tutor.

Upon completion of the 2nd week of lessons, we will send the invoice by email / SMS / snail mail. Our invoice would clearly state the agency commission payable and our account numbers for payment via ATM or internet banking. Please contact us once the funds have been transferred for our verification and records. For cash or cheque payment, please contact us to arrange for collection.

If you wish to change your password, you may login to your account and change your password.
If you forgot your email address which you had used to register, send an email to

T4. I don’t want to give tuition anymore, how do I close my account?

If you wish to close your account, please send an email to info@tutorcity.com.sg, providing your name and NRIC. Once your account has been closed, there is no way to reactivate it and you will have to re-register a new account.

Should there be a serious complaint lodged by parent against a tutor (e.g. no-show, persistently late), Tutor City will close your account without informing you.

T5. Is it compulsory to upload my photo and certificates?

No, Tutor City strongly encourages you to upload your photo, taken in a neat and professional manner, so that the parent or student can visualise what you look like.
As for certificates, it will increase your credibility as a qualified tutor. Upon receiving your certificates, our administrator will tally against your particulars and indicate a “Cert-verified” icon next to your profile.
Both of these – photo and certificates, will raise your chances of being shortlisted by the parent or student.

T6. How will I be notified of new assignments?

We normally send an SMS or call you on new assignments which closely matches your profile. Therefore, you will have to ensure that you provide a valid handphone number or direct line at all times.
Before you take up the assignment, please consider carefully on your commitment with regards to the location and frequency of the lessons. You can then reply with your available timings, rate per hour (if applicable) and any other information requested in the SMS or call.
If you are unable to take up the assignment, please ignore the SMS broadcast.
At any time, if you do not wish to receive any broadcasts from us, please contact us to close your account.

T7. After I reply to your SMS broadcasts, what should I do?
Tutor City will present your profile to the parent or student for their consideration. If you are selected, we will contact you to follow up on the start date and address.
If you do not receive any response from Tutor City, it is likely that the assignment was matched to another tutor. As there are many SMSes sent out daily, it would be impossible for Tutor City to reply one-by-one on the outcome of each assignment.

T8. How do I increase my chances of landing the assignment?

There are many ways of getting more assignments, such as quoting a low per-hour rate, broadening your scope of travel in more areas in Singapore, increase the number of subjects you teach and having more time slots for tuition.
In the long run, you will need to build a credible profile of yourself by providing good service to parents and garnering positive feedbacks. Be punctual for your assignments and don’t drop out of assignments abruptly. Build good relationships with parents and with us, of course, and you will get many assignments in the future!

T9. I have confirmed an assignment, what should I take note of in the 1st lesson?
Find out how to get to the student’s place! You can use
Google Maps or Streetdirectory to find out the direction, public transport and exact location.
Record the address and contact numbers in your handphone so that you can call us in the event of an emergency.
Pack your certificates to bring on the actual day so that you won’t scramble for it at the last minute. Prepare what you want to teach on the 1st day and pack the relevant materials as well.
On the 1st lesson, dress appropriately and be punctual!

T10. Are there any contractual obligations to the student once I accept the assignment?

Once you have been accepted by the parent, you must complete the first 4 weeks of lessons. Thereafter, you are free to terminate the assignment however on a professional level, you are expected to commit at least until the student’s next C.A. or exam.

T11. What are the commission charges?

Tutor City levies a 50% of total tuition fees for 4 weeks of lessons (usually 4 / 8 / 12 lessons) which we will collect from the client directly. Even if there is a lesson postponed, we will still charge the same amount of commission.
If the tuition is terminated before the 4 weeks is up, please refer to the Terms and Conditions in the Register as Tutor form on how the commission is charged.

T12. What happens if the client refuse to pay due to poor teaching or service rendered?

We are very strict on service levels and teaching methods provided to students. If there is a complaint and client refuses to pay, Tutor City will give the tutor a chance to explain and defend himself/herself. If there is a strong case, we will bill the client and refer to the Small Claims Tribunal if the client still refuses to pay.
However, if the complaint is valid and received immediately after the 1st lesson, the client will not be billed for the 1st lesson.

T13. Are my personal particulars safe with Tutor City?

We respect each individual’s privacy and will not sell your information. Only if and when required by law, we will then provide the necessary information to government agencies or police.
